The Sub-Zero temp sensor, and the faults it imitates

The thermistor is an NTC sensor whose resistance changes with temperature, and the control reads it to decide when to cool. If it reports colder than reality the cabinet under-cools and the food warms; if it reports warmer, the compressor runs and runs. Sub-Zero lists a faulty temperature sensor or thermostat among the causes of both a warm refrigerator and a warm freezer, alongside far more expensive possibilities.

This is the good outcome on a warm cabinet. A sensor sits outside the refrigerant circuit, needs no recovery or recharge, and is a modest model-specific part. Yet its symptoms are indistinguishable from a low charge or a failing compressor if nobody actually tests it.

Sub-Zero names a temperature sensor or thermostat malfunction among the causes of both a warm refrigerator and a warm freezer. That puts it in the same symptom set as a sealed system fault, which is exactly why identifying the model and testing properly matters more than pattern-matching a description over the phone.

A thermistor is tested by resistance against temperature, not by looking at it.
