Removing a built-in Sub-Zero for service, and what it involves
A built-in Sub-Zero sits in a cabinetry opening cut to published dimensions: 24 inches deep, 83-3/4 inches high, with a 3-1/2 inch finished return each side. It is not freestanding and it does not roll out on castors. Drawing one forward for service is careful, planned work, and on a flush inset or integrated installation it is the largest single part of the job.

The difference is structural rather than cosmetic. A freestanding refrigerator is a finished appliance that stands in a gap. A built-in Sub-Zero is fitted into an opening built around it, often trimmed with joinery that closes the gap completely, and on a panel-ready cabinet the front is a custom panel made by a cabinetmaker.
So every repair splits into two questions: what has failed, and how do we reach it without damaging a kitchen. On many faults the answer to the second is that we do not need to move the cabinet at all, because the machine compartment is behind the top grille and the evaporator is behind an interior panel.

Most work happens without pulling the cabinet. The condenser, compressor and drier are behind the top grille on Classic and PRO cabinets. The temperature sensor and the defrost heater are behind the interior rear panel. The gasket and the light are inside the compartment.
What does require the cabinet to come forward is levelling it in its opening, and work at the back: wiring and the connector block, some sealed system access, and levelling. That is when the joinery matters and when the visit takes longer.
Flush inset refrigerator repair and the published dimensions
Sub-Zero publishes the rough-in figures, and they are worth knowing because they tell you how much room there is to work with. Standard Classic installation: 24 inch opening depth, 83-3/4 inch opening height, 3-1/2 inch finished return each side, typical filler 3/4 inch. Standard opening widths are 29-1/2 inches for a 30 inch model, 35-1/2 for a 36, 41-1/2 for a 42 and 47-1/2 for a 48.
Flush inset is tighter by design: 26-3/16 inches to the rear of the unit, 23-1/16 inches flush depth with cleats, a 3/4 inch cleat and an 84 inch height. That extra precision is exactly why a flush inset cabinet takes longer to draw out and put back without marking anything.

Built-in describes the installation: the cabinet sits in an opening rather than standing free. Integrated goes further, with the appliance faced in custom panels so it disappears into the run of cabinetry, which Sub-Zero marks with an ID suffix on models like CL3650RID and CL3050UID. Every integrated cabinet is built-in; not every built-in is integrated.

Start with what needs no access at all. Check the compartment temperature against its setpoint, 38 F fresh food and 0 F freezer. Then clean the condenser behind the top grille. Sub-Zero states that above 48 F in the refrigerator or 10 F in the freezer, the cabinet is unlikely to recover from a condenser cleaning alone and needs certified service.

A 48 inch Legacy Classic side-by-side. Two things follow from that width: the opening is 47-1/2 inches on a standard installation, and dual refrigeration means the two halves have independent sealed systems, so a warm refrigerator side alongside a perfect freezer is normal rather than puzzling.

Designer columns are integrated single-temperature cabinets, and their serial tag is inside the middle drawer near the guide opposite the hinge rather than on a door frame.
